Synopsis

GITMEK: My Marlon and Brando won many awards in festivals all over the world including Tribeca, Tokyo, Istanbul and Sarajevo. It is based on the true story of Ayça Damgacı and her extraordinary journey from Istanbul to the Iraqi border during the Gulf War in 2005.

On a film-set Ayça, a fiery Turkish actress, met Hama Ali, a charismatic Iraqi actor locally famous for his performance as Superman. Ayça and Hama Ali had a passionate love affair before returning to their respective homes. From his Kurdish village, Hama Ali sends Ayça video love letters. These videos capture the hellish violence engulfing Iraq, the goats and uncles populating his rural area and his tender affection for her. Feeling suffocated by her own city and angered by the indifference towards the Iraqi war, Ayça decides to make the journey eastwards to Iraq to be reunited with her lover.

At a time when many people are fleeing from East to West, Ayça undertakes the opposite journey in search of love. She encounters a wide variety of individuals on her journey including immigrant artists from the slums of Istanbul, mothers camped out at border towns waiting for news from their children over the border, long distance truckers and crazy taxi drivers. Her journey full of frustrating and dangerous cultural misunderstandings, language barriers and bureaucracy takes her through breathtaking landscapes during terrifying times.
