Yılmaz Güney's directoral debut, SEYYİTHAN (1968), is a tragic love story set against the backdrop of provincial, rural life in Turkey. It is considered by many to mark the beginning of Turkish cinema as a means of social criticism.

Seyyit returns to his village after 7 years to find that everyone, including his fiancee believes that he is dead. His betrothed, Keje, is about to marry the rich landowner Haydar. Keje decides to continue in her marraige to Haydar in order to preserve her family's honor.
